Farmers cultivate Litchi for its juicy fruits of exceptional quality and taste. Furthermore, vitamin C and B complex vitamins are abundant in this fruit. This fruit originated in southern China, and India is the second-largest producer of Litchi fruit after China. Litchi fruit is primarily grown in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. Indian farmers grow it in Bihar, Jharkhand, Punjab and Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Uttaranchal, Assam, Tripura, and West Bengal due to rising demand.

Litchi Cultivation Techniques & Tips

To cultivate it, we must meet some unique requirements of Litchi farming. Litchi should be grown in a specific way for the best results. So, let us learn more about them.

Climate Prerequisites

Litchi cultivation thrives at temperatures ranging from 25 to 35°C. Sowing operations are best carried out at temperatures ranging from 25 to 35°C. Litchi cultivation requires a minimum of 1200 mm of rainfall per year. If you grow it at these temperatures, you will easily get a healthy and higher yield. In addition, harvesting should be done at a temperature of 25 to 30°C.

Soil Prerequisites

It can be grown in a variety of soils. Litchi cultivation can benefit from deep, fertile, well-drained soils with a medium texture. However, the pH of the soil must be between 7.5 and 8. Aside from that, high pH and saline soils are incompatible with Litchi cultivation. Apart from this, you should prepare the soil for better germination and growth. Favourite Varieties

  • Calcuttia – The fruits are large and appealing. Harvestable in the third week of June. Fruits have a moderately juicy texture. Crop with a high yield
  • Dehradun – Early bearing variety, ready to harvest in the second week of June, attractive colour fruits but prone to splitting, sweet, soft, and moderately juicy fruits
  • Seedless Late – The majority of the fleshy fruits are deep carmine red, sweet, tasty, juicy, and ready to harvest in the third week of June.
  • Rose Scented – Mid-season variety with medium to large-sized fruits that are juicy, sweet, and have greyish pulp.
  • Saharanpur
  • Muzaffarpur \ Khatti \ Gulabi

Preparation of Land

You should plough, cross-plough, and level the soil with the help of mileage and high-quality tractors such as Powertrac euro 47 and others. It can assist you in completing work while spending as money as possible. You must ensure that there is no water stagnation in the field.

Sowing Prerequisites

After the monsoon, the crop can be sown from August to September. In Punjab, it can be extended until November. First, select 2-year-old plants for planting and keep an 8-10 metre distance between rows. After that, dig 1m x 1m x 1m pits and leave them in the sun for a few days. You should then fill the pits with soil and well-decomposed cow dung. Litchi cultivation can be accomplished through direct sowing or transplanting.


Commercially propagate Litchi using the Air-Layering method. Seed propagation is unsuitable because it takes too long. So, for the Air-Layering method, choose branches that are 30-60cm long and 2-3cm in diameter. You must keep pests and diseases at bay on the branches. Furthermore, you should complete this operation between July and September.

Pruning and Instruction

To achieve a specific shape, you must first train. Litchi farming does not necessitate pruning. After harvesting the fruits, only light pruning is required to support new shoots.


Because it is a slow-growing crop, it takes 7 to 10 years to reach commercial maturity. You can, however, take intercrop during the first 3 to 4 years.

Plant Safeguarding

Plant suitable windbreak trees for 4-5 years around the litchi plantation to protect young plants from hot wind and cold waves.


Irrigation should be applied at all stages of development, with frequent irrigation required during the early growth stage. During the summer, you should rinse the young plants twice a week and the old plants (around 4 years) once a week. Furthermore, rinse the field at the end of November or the first week of December to protect the crop from injury. The fruit development stage is the most critical for irrigation. So, at this stage, you should rinse the field twice a week to keep the fruits free of cracks.


When the fruit matures, the colour changes from green to pink, and the skin becomes smooth. You should then harvest the fruits in the bunch. Furthermore, you should gather the fruits when they are ripe for the local market and before they reach maturity for export purposes. After harvesting, remove any damaged fruits and store them in small boxes with green Litchi leaves. And keep them at a temperature of 1.6 to 1.7°C.
