If you have recently bought a new power tool, then you may doubt yourself when it comes to the correct way on using it.

If you have just bought a portable bandsaw, then chances are you likely feel the same way.

In this article we will give you a beginner’s guide on how to use a portable bandsaw as well as some tips on how to stay safe when using one.

  1. Read The Instructions – It can be very tempting to just throw away any manuals/instructions that come with what we purchase. However, for something like this, we want to make sure we read the instructions so we fully understand how to use the machine and how it works.
  2. Make Sure You Are Using The Right Blade – It is important that you check the width of the blade, the thickness and the DPP (teeth per inch) based on what work you will be doing. Thinner blades tend to have a smaller turning radius which makes it good for fine, curved cuts. If you are not going to be working with small cuts and curves, then you should take a look at using thicker blades.
  3. Adjust The Blade – Whilst the machine is unplugged, you will need to adjust the blade so that it is rigid enough to not move from the cut, but loose enough so that it doesn’t get damaged.
  4. Check The Alignment – Get access to the adjustment wheels by taking the cover off, and turn the upper wheel around 15-20 times, ensuring that the blade doesn’t deviate during this process. If it does, use the adjustment knob to set the blade in the correct position.
  5. Check Your Environment – Ensure that the workspace you are in is clean and organised. Make sure there is no debris or any spills on the floor. Also, make sure that you have enough space to rotate the work piece without having any problems.

How To Stay Safe When Using A Portable Bandsaw

  • Secure the machine tightly
  • Wear safety glasses or a face shield
  • Hold the work piece firmly
  • Keep your hands to the side of the sheet
  • Don’t touch any cut pieces whilst the tape is still operating
  • Use the right blade all the time
  • Don’t leave the machine unattended
  • Make sure all protection practices are in place
  • Make sure the machine is working and there are no faults

Conclusion

And there we have it.

Now you should feel confident in using a portable bandsaw. Make sure to double check all of the safety measures we mentioned above and you should find yourself comfortably operating a portable bandsaw.
