Azoospermia Treatment

Lack or absence of sperm in a man’s ejaculate is called azoospermia. This article contains comprehensive information about azoospermia its the diagnosis and azoospermia treatment.

Is Azoospermia common?

Azoospermia is a rare condition which is found in only 1% of  world’s men population. However, 15% of all infertile men are azoospermic.

What is the difference between Obstructive and Non-Obstructive Azoospermia?

Azoospermia is mainly classified into two types i.e., obstructive and non-obstructive azoospermia. Former is less severe than latter. Obstructive azoospermia is caused by some blockage or obstruction in reproductive system restraining the sperm from traveling. The body is producing sperm but it is obstructed from reaching the semen. Whereas, non-obstructive azoospermia is a condition where no sperm is produced by the body at all. It often remains incurable, leading to infertility in men.

How Azoospermia is diagnosed?

Azoospermia can be diagnosed after a series of clinical and physical evaluation. It is diagnosed after analysing two different semen sample of a man.

These semen samples are examined under a high-powered microscope following a spin in centrifuge. Now questions arise what is centrifuge? Centrifuge is a laboratory tool that spins and separates test sample into various parts. In case of semen, if sperm is present, it separates from it which can be viewed through the microscope. When it is not separated, azoospermia is diagnosed.

More than one sample is used to exclude any doubt as sometimes, in one sample he may come off as azoospermic whereas in other he may not. Obstructive and non-obstructive IVF Treatment in Pakistan require different approaches. Therefore, a detailed physical  evaluation, hormone test and genetic testing is done to know the particular type of azoospermia you may have. In the end, testicular biopsy is done to determine whether you have any blockage or not. Testicular biopsy is performed under sedation. If sperm is found during the biopsy, it may allow you to achieve fatherhood through ICSI / IVF.

What is azoospermia treatment?

Azoospermia treatment depends upon the type of it. As mentioned earlier, obstructive azoospermia can be treated through medication and surgical procedures. However, non-obstructive azoospermia can be difficult to treat.

Obstructive azoospermia can be treated through surgical procedures allowing you to attain fatherhood naturally. You will just have to undergo surgery to remove the obstruction.

Various treatments are recommended for non-obstructive azoospermia by infertility specialists. However, your infertility can still remain incurable if no sperm is being produced in your reproductive system.
